There was a time when I thought going somewhere meant I needed an outfit for everything.

Airport outfit.

Breakfast outfit.

Pool outfit.

Excursion outfit.

Dinner outfit.

Cute little “I’m just casually walking around the resort looking fabulous” outfit. 😂

And somehow, three days away could turn into enough clothes for a two-week relocation.

But the more I travel, the more I realize something:

The clothes don’t have to do all the work.

When you are the main character—and your jewelry, pedicure, sunglasses, shoes and little trinkets are doing the styling—you can wear surprisingly simple clothes and still look completely put together.

That is the packing philosophy I’m taking with me now.

 

✨ Start With the Woman, Not the Outfit

A plain black dress isn’t boring when the woman wearing it has:

fresh toes,

a beautiful anklet,

gold jewelry,

great sunglasses,

a cute bag,

and the confidence to walk into dinner like she has reservations under Main Character. 😂

The same white tank can work with linen pants one day and shorts the next.

A swimsuit becomes an outfit with a cover-up, anklet, sunglasses and sandals.

A simple dress can look completely different when you change the accessories.

That’s when I stopped asking:

“How many outfits do I need?”

and started asking:

“What pieces make me feel like me?”

That question produces a much smaller suitcase.

🦶🏽 Your Feet Are Part of the Outfit

Colorful jewelry, statement sunglasses or a fun bag.

Now neutral clothing can move between all three.

The outfit stays simple.

The accessories change the mood.

And because jewelry takes up almost no luggage space, you get significantly more combinations without significantly more packing.

🧳 Pack Clothes That Know How to Cooperate

My ideal travel clothes aren’t pieces that only work once.

I want pieces that can switch jobs.

A button-down can become a beach cover-up.

A simple dress can go from sightseeing to dinner.

A neutral tank works with multiple bottoms.

Linen pants can look relaxed during the day and polished at night.

A swimsuit can become part of an outfit underneath a skirt or cover-up.

The goal isn’t:

“Nobody can ever see me repeat this shirt.”

Girl, these people don’t know you. 😂

The goal is:

“Can I make several looks from what I brought?”

That’s a much better packing question.

Choose good basics.

Take care of yourself.

Do the toes.

Pack the jewelry.

Bring the sunglasses.

Change the accessories.

And let you be the thing people remember.
